The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO /ˈneɪtoʊ/; French: Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique NordOTAN), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, was an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. The organization constituted a system of collective nations.

NATO was formed as a way to protect nations (that have joined NATO) from communist rule, as an opposing force to the Warsaw Pact. This had lead to the Cold War , with NATO and the Warsaw Pact as enemies, before tensions eased around the (mid to late) 1980s when Gorbachev and George H.W Bush signed the START I(?) treaty, before the Soviet Union collapsed in December 26, 1991, freeing most countries who have signed the Warsaw Pact (or were in it) from Soviet rule.[citation needed]

Before the Korean war, NATO was vulnerable to attack by any external party. NATO was little more than a political association until the Korean War galvanized the organization's member states, and an integrated military structure and the withdrawal of France from NATO's military structure in 1966 for 30 years. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the organization was drawn into the breakup of Yugoslavia, and conducted its first military interventions in Bosnia from 1992 to 1995 and later Yugoslavia in 1999. Politically, the organization sought better relations with former Warsaw Pact countries, several of which joined the alliance in 1999 and 2004. It continued operations at a low leading up to the ACMF-NATO war.

NATO was the main belligerent in the ACMF-NATO war, and is a strategic military alliance in the ATF universe. The organization is now, much like its ACMF adversary, a remnant of its former self due to the events of the flash. However, much of the pre-war equipment is still retained by NATO descendants, and this combined with their upbringing of military training results in a effective and capable force, although many members are isolated from each other.

In 2115, it is possible that all NATO remnants who were previously stationed in America are extinct, disbanded, or integrated to USCPF during the dustbowl era. Some NATO soldiers survive as the event goes by from Nuclear Winter to the Atlantic Crisis, but most of the NATO members did not survived the aftermath.

In the British Isles, it was presumed that the NATO remnants integrated to RCO and UEBC or becoming militia wastlelanders.
